I let the kids choose a word that related to Valentine's Day for their topic....(chocolate, cards, Cupid, hearts, love, etc.) <br />
<br />
A Cinguain is one of the easiest poems to have your kids write...only 5 lines...<br />
<br />
1. Topic ( Ice cream)<br />
2. 2 Adjectives ( smooth, delicious)<br />
3. 3 verbs ending in "ing" ( eating, enjoying, tasting)<br />
4. 4 letter phrase (in a waffle cone)<br />
5. Synonym for topic or noun ( dessert)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kkY7Wt24tVw/TytWlW0exCI/AAAAAAAAAQA/o3vAGnfeLI8/s1600/photo%2B1-2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kkY7Wt24tVw/TytWlW0exCI/AAAAAAAAAQA/o3vAGnfeLI8/s400/photo%2B1-2.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-h3CmEMhzz7U/TytWt6xfxBI/AAAAAAAAAQM/uN29cCDqRwk/s1600/photo%2B2-2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-h3CmEMhzz7U/TytWt6xfxBI/AAAAAAAAAQM/uN29cCDqRwk/s400/photo%2B2-2.JPG" /></a></div><br />
We also wrote paragraphs on "Love is.." We have a 5 step paragraph that we teach as part of our curriculum so we followed those rules...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3UsBDgic0jc/TytW__ZuW3I/AAAAAAAAAQY/7ulDTjOcnxA/s1600/photo%2B4-2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3UsBDgic0jc/TytW__ZuW3I/AAAAAAAAAQY/7ulDTjOcnxA/s400/photo%2B4-2.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Both of these projects will go in their 2nd grade portfolio :)<br />

Those of you crafty gals out there know what I'm talking about. The itch that that doesn't leave your mind/body until you CRAFT it out. I know i'm a bit early for Valentine's Day, but I just couldn't wait any longer. I found an adorable wreath while searching the web for ideas and headed straight to JoAnn after school yesterday. I spent a whole TEN bucks for all the material to make TWO wreaths! WOOT!<br />
<br />
Here is my little love filled creation that will hang by our front door!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CDnFtuFMyhs/Twcrwu2ufKI/AAAAAAAAAOI/-VcFiE-Dk1c/s1600/wreath.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CDnFtuFMyhs/Twcrwu2ufKI/AAAAAAAAAOI/-VcFiE-Dk1c/s400/wreath.jpg" /></a></div><br />
I cut strips of material and tulle about 1 inch wide and 6 inches long. I also found a wire hanger and bent it into the shape of a heart. Tie a single knot with the material strips and pop in a movie. You'll be done in no time! <br />
<br />
<a href="http://s1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc406/adamssa4/?action=view&current=sig3.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc406/adamssa4/sig3.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>Sarah Adamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07628421840058390913noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4707278157410470158.post-744251331125268722011-12-03T20:19:00.000-08:002011-12-03T20:19:08.236-08:00Rudolph Ornaments....EASY and ADORABLEI LOVE a good holiday project to make with my kids and thanks to Pinterest I found an adorable one! Not to mention, it was EASY.....no cutting, getting crazy with glue, kids begging to wash hands, can you help me whines or I can't do this Mrs. Slayton!!! NONE of that! It was painless and I got to use my hot glue gun. I love a good hot glue gun project. <br />
<br />
Okay, so here it is! All you need are plastic ornaments (glass could be a bit risky), pipe cleaners, google eyes, red pom poms and red shredded paper. I had the kids use their pencils (eraser side) and push the paper down into the ornament. It worked great.<br />
<br />

I really wanted to have the kids write about a gingerbread this year, so I thought of a cute creative writing project last week. We did them yesterday and they turned out cute :)<br />
<br />
Here is the fill in the blank story I put on the SmartBoard. <br />
<br />
Hi! My name is ___________ the gingerbread boy/girl. I saved myself from being eaten yesterday! I jumped off of the cookie sheet and ran over the _________________, under the ________________, through the _______________, around the __________________, and hid in a ______________________! I feel so ______________ and ________________ to be alive! <br />
<br />
I really pushed them to write descriptively by using at least ONE adjective before each noun when filling in the blank. (ex: I ran over the gooey dough, under the baker's hand, ... )<br />
<br />
I was super impressed by their creativity and nouns they chose! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bqaV5cI1_dU/TtbzzomWtmI/AAAAAAAAANk/mZhGMGmzXNs/s1600/gingerbreadwriting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bqaV5cI1_dU/TtbzzomWtmI/AAAAAAAAANk/mZhGMGmzXNs/s400/gingerbreadwriting.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<a href="http://s1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc406/adamssa4/?action=view&current=sig3.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc406/adamssa4/sig3.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>Sarah Adamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07628421840058390913noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4707278157410470158.post-73361268014571619332011-11-26T21:13:00.000-08:002011-11-26T21:14:54.087-08:00Vintage OrnamentsI made these adorable vintage ornaments this week! Older grades could easily make these with a few alterations. Make the strips bigger and longer so they are easier to weave and glue. The strips I used were about eight inches long and a quarter inch wide. They were a bit time consuming....I made about 3 during one Christmas movie. <br />
<br />
If you'd like to try making these, click <a href="http://houserevivals.blogspot.com/2010/11/make-woven-star-from-vintage-book-pages.html">here</a> for the tutorial! I found cute vintage tags that I glued in the middle. I also used scrapbook paper instead of book pages. I also used gold Scribbles glitter glue to decorate each point. <br />
<br />
Right now our fridge is adorned with these cuties :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gnOTWqk-ITM/TtHGIT3b4TI/AAAAAAAAANA/YQg7x6ar8yo/s1600/vintage%2Bornament%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gnOTWqk-ITM/TtHGIT3b4TI/AAAAAAAAANA/YQg7x6ar8yo/s400/vintage%2Bornament%2B1.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cQ9oimbDsms/TtHGOutpkqI/AAAAAAAAANM/QMPh6aS-_g4/s1600/vintage%2Bornament%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cQ9oimbDsms/TtHGOutpkqI/AAAAAAAAANM/QMPh6aS-_g4/s400/vintage%2Bornament%2B2.jpg" /></a></div><br />

Until then, I will enjoy making these adorable Oreo turkeys tomorrow morning! Hoping they turn out looking at least <i>similar </i>to the picture :)<br />

I came up with it last year and couldn't wait to do it again. I introduce rebus poems to the kids and then I share with them a rebus poem that I wrote. I bought lots of cute Halloween scrapbook stickers and typed up the poem. I put it on foam board when it was complete. <br />
<br />
Here is a picture of my rebus poem...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UzYkN9g-a6k/Tqdy7PiVMfI/AAAAAAAAALI/GsThx633sBE/s1600/rebuspoem.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UzYkN9g-a6k/Tqdy7PiVMfI/AAAAAAAAALI/GsThx633sBE/s400/rebuspoem.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WGe6qqTPMf4/TqdzBVQNI6I/AAAAAAAAALU/uDMYDCY09aY/s1600/rebuspoem2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WGe6qqTPMf4/TqdzBVQNI6I/AAAAAAAAALU/uDMYDCY09aY/s400/rebuspoem2.jpg" /></a></div><br />
After I share my poem and we read it together, I have the students write their own spooky Halloween rebus story (or poem). I put about 10 Halloween stickers on paper and photocopied a sheet for each student. They cut and glue the photocopied stickers to replace words in their stories!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jo4lYJ-nilY/Tqd1nAfYi1I/AAAAAAAAALg/Q6xeNeday3s/s1600/rebuspoem3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jo4lYJ-nilY/Tqd1nAfYi1I/AAAAAAAAALg/Q6xeNeday3s/s400/rebuspoem3.jpg" /></a></div><a title="View Spooky Rebus Story on Scribd" href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/70318193/Spooky-Rebus-Story" style="margin: 12px auto 6px auto; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; -x-system-font: none; display: block; text-decoration: underline;">Spooky Rebus Story</a><iframe class="scribd_iframe_embed" src="http://www.scribd.com/embeds/70318193/content?start_page=1&view_mode=list&access_key=key-47idj213qpx67xvimqg" data-auto-height="true" data-aspect-ratio="0.772727272727273" scrolling="no" id="doc_1820" width="100%" height="600" frameborder="0"></iframe><script type="text/javascript">(function() { var scribd = document.createElement("script"); scribd.type = "text/javascript"; scribd.async = true; scribd.src = "http://www.scribd.com/javascripts/embed_code/inject.js"; var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(scribd, s); })();</script><br />

I teach a lot of poetry so we discuss end line rhyme and practice using our expressive voices. It's a short poem, but the kids love to act it out and perform for other classes :) <br />
<br />
I made the 5 pumpkins out of cereal boxes. I cut the pumpkins out, covered them in felt, gave them faces, used pipe cleaners for vines and used tongue depressors as handles. Super easy and fun if you like a good craft project :) I do. <br />
<br />
Here is a video I took today....This was our first day doing it...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyDhlnGPDyPgOlNxGffMDqL_ptqI1uh0cLo2a53R0YLaCWSCsKbcVMWOekNYA8wOlxpDEZjbX_zURlcaRrfcQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br />
After we act out the poem, we do another activity. I pass out a gate and 5 pumpkins to color. They color and cut the pumpkins and glue them on the gate. I also have them write what each pumpkin says since we just learned how to punctuate quotation sentences! Here is a closer look at the pumpkins...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-To4bAyRtvMY/TqI6kGTRIrI/AAAAAAAAAK8/AzDh_f5e0Wg/s1600/5pumpkinspic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-To4bAyRtvMY/TqI6kGTRIrI/AAAAAAAAAK8/AzDh_f5e0Wg/s320/5pumpkinspic.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Happy October!<br />

YAY. By the way, I LOVE October and am totally stoked that my favorite month is here! <br />
<br />
Okay, now time for my reading program!<br />
<br />
Our slogan is.... SCOOP your way to a FUN day! I came up with this program last year and it has been super successful! My students LOVE it and so do the parents. Here is how it works:<br />
<br />
1. Students are motivated to read by earning scoops for their cone and working toward the ultimate goal of reaching 7 scoops and having an ice cream party!<br />
2. Each student is given a reading sheet with boxes. Parents initial each box for every 20 minutes of reading time. <br />
3. When a reading sheet is complete, students turn it in and choose a scoop for their cone! <br />
4. They earn small incentives for reaching certain numbers of scoops<br />
5. All students are working to get at least 7 scoops (VERY attainable goal)<br />
6. We will have an ice cream party the last month of school! Ice cream, tons of toppings, games, music, etc. <br />
<br />
Here are the cones...I found the perfect "waffle cone" scrapbook paper from Michaels, cut the cones and laminated them. I also used glitter sticker letters to put on their name.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-n5BQrXeUw60/TofeLuRQZ3I/AAAAAAAAAKI/CY7IyjTypMw/s1600/IMG_1826.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="267" width="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-n5BQrXeUw60/TofeLuRQZ3I/AAAAAAAAAKI/CY7IyjTypMw/s400/IMG_1826.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Here are the SCOOPS! Also made from various scrapbook paper. They love choosing their FLAVA. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LN6PnnbL25w/Tofe593C7pI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/_rPodGY6wzM/s1600/IMG_1814.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="267" width="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LN6PnnbL25w/Tofe593C7pI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/_rPodGY6wzM/s400/IMG_1814.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Here are the reading pads I use...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MA7_eyPSP30/ToffJgihUMI/AAAAAAAAAKY/5_FfQqA_UTI/s1600/IMG_1846.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="267" width="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MA7_eyPSP30/ToffJgihUMI/AAAAAAAAAKY/5_FfQqA_UTI/s400/IMG_1846.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Here are the rewards...<br />
2 Scoops = cool pencil, 4 Scoops = awesome bookmark, 6 Scoops = ice cream pen, 7 Scoops = certificate and ice cream party!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pbLn0Ye3G2Y/ToflliSltSI/AAAAAAAAAKw/mbAsE6Ba2hw/s1600/IMG_2220.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="267" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pbLn0Ye3G2Y/ToflliSltSI/AAAAAAAAAKw/mbAsE6Ba2hw/s400/IMG_2220.JPG" /></a></div><br />
When they reach 6 scoops, they earn one of these adorable ice cream pens :) <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RSiRtMJ016E/ToffuLUV9qI/AAAAAAAAAKg/Q8MtmMNn0AI/s1600/IMG_1849.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="267" width="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RSiRtMJ016E/ToffuLUV9qI/AAAAAAAAAKg/Q8MtmMNn0AI/s400/IMG_1849.JPG" /></a></div><br />
When they reach 7 they get this certificate...I made and ordered them from VISTAPRINT :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aSWB7ibb_2Y/TofoEDrHTgI/AAAAAAAAAK4/xRRPa-cYBUo/s1600/vistascoops.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="97" width="125" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aSWB7ibb_2Y/TofoEDrHTgI/AAAAAAAAAK4/xRRPa-cYBUo/s400/vistascoops.jpg" /></a></div><br />
And last, they look adorable on a boring door..<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oO0tYvGLsRw/Tofi9DDBImI/AAAAAAAAAKo/CoG-DLr7wtc/s1600/20110517093822.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oO0tYvGLsRw/Tofi9DDBImI/AAAAAAAAAKo/CoG-DLr7wtc/s400/20110517093822.jpg" /></a></div><br />

I can't believe how fast time flies! I have been super busy with all my DIY wedding projects, so my blog has taken a back seat! During the first week of school I have my kids think of 3 goals for the school year. We talk about the importance of working hard, trying your best, learning from your mistakes and what it means to make and achieve a goal. I love how they turned out this year! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uq8WSNHtcwA/Tn4HjZdYC-I/AAAAAAAAAJw/wf8lqlRolm0/s1600/IMG_2497.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="267" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uq8WSNHtcwA/Tn4HjZdYC-I/AAAAAAAAAJw/wf8lqlRolm0/s400/IMG_2497.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EDhH4BBntrY/Tn4ITTJQfcI/AAAAAAAAAJ4/dNHcAuKSyEg/s1600/IMG_2496.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="267" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EDhH4BBntrY/Tn4ITTJQfcI/AAAAAAAAAJ4/dNHcAuKSyEg/s400/IMG_2496.JPG" /></a></div><br />

I love seeing their cute posters and learning new fun things about each student. Here is how I work it. <br />
<br />
- I pull sticks to decide who gets to be Star Student<br />
- I send home our STAR bag on Friday (it's filled with information for parents) <br />
- They make a poster over the weekend to share on Monday. Here is mine :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-i5F60-gMIgY/Tmbq-AErDvI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/mVbvuLU5hOA/s1600/IMG_2225.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="267" width="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-i5F60-gMIgY/Tmbq-AErDvI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/mVbvuLU5hOA/s400/IMG_2225.JPG" /></a></div>- They bring their FAVORITE picture book for me to read to the class during the week<br />
- They get to enjoy special privileges that week as well (line leader, paper passer, run errands, etc.)<br />
- I read a letter from their parent/s on why they are their STAR student (stationary is sent home in the folder)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7sm_dOMzoxg/TmbrYwRk40I/AAAAAAAAAJY/Myqg2iiwqOI/s1600/starpaper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="136" width="136" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7sm_dOMzoxg/TmbrYwRk40I/AAAAAAAAAJY/Myqg2iiwqOI/s400/starpaper.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Thats it! Pretty simple and sweet! The letters from parents is new this year and I think it'll be super cute... I will save the letter and put it in their 2nd grade portfolio. <br />
<br />
If you have any ideas or thoughts about things to do for Star Student, I'd love to hear! <br />

I have used the card system before in class and it has worked wonders. This year, most of the teachers at our school are using the clip chart system. We are a departmentalized school where the students switch classes for different subjects so we wanted a cohesive system that all the teachers use. Of course, I used the Pinterest inspired clips and made mine with glitter paper and modge podge! I added the buttons for an extra touch! <br />
<br />
Here are some pics! I have also attached a rubric for the colors that we devised as a team. <br />

<br />
I came up with the <b>Getting 2 Know u Game</b> that the kids LOVE. I created cards with questions on them, printed them on bright paper, laminated and cut. You will need one set of cards per pair. <br />
<br />
How to play:<br />
- The students sit across from each other and take turns drawing a card from the pile. They ask their partner the question that is on the card (example, "What is your favorite Disney character?" or "What would your dream birthday party be like?"). <br />
- When all of the questions are asked, each child is responsible for sharing one thing about their partner to the class.<br />
<br />
This game is a great first day ice breaker...for EVERYONE...<br />
<a title="View Getting Know Game on Scribd" href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/62948650/Getting-Know-Game" style="margin: 12px auto 6px auto; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; -x-system-font: none; display: block; text-decoration: underline;">Getting Know Game</a><iframe class="scribd_iframe_embed" src="http://www.scribd.com/embeds/62948650/content?start_page=1&view_mode=list&access_key=key-o0rg4964pu4vnp9sc9s" data-auto-height="true" data-aspect-ratio="0.772727272727273" scrolling="no" id="doc_33452" width="100%" height="600" frameborder="0"></iframe><script type="text/javascript">(function() { var scribd = document.createElement("script"); scribd.type = "text/javascript"; scribd.async = true; scribd.src = "http://www.scribd.com/javascripts/embed_code/inject.js"; var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(scribd, s); })();</script><br />
<br />
I also love doing the <b>Friend Find</b>! I came up with things that relate directly to the kids and where we live. <br />
<a title="View Friend Find on Scribd" href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/62949125/Friend-Find" style="margin: 12px auto 6px auto; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; -x-system-font: none; display: block; text-decoration: underline;">Friend Find</a><iframe class="scribd_iframe_embed" src="http://www.scribd.com/embeds/62949125/content?start_page=1&view_mode=list&access_key=key-67zifci2fue0znkl0bj" data-auto-height="true" data-aspect-ratio="0.772727272727273" scrolling="no" id="doc_63228" width="100%" height="600" frameborder="0"></iframe><script type="text/javascript">(function() { var scribd = document.createElement("script"); scribd.type = "text/javascript"; scribd.async = true; scribd.src = "http://www.scribd.com/javascripts/embed_code/inject.js"; var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(scribd, s); })();</script><br />
<br />
<br />
And last but not least, <b>The Time Capsule!</b> Just a reminder to put these in a spot where you'll remember to pass them back at the end of the year! <br />
<a title="View Time Capsule Questionnaire on Scribd" href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/62949150/Time-Capsule-Questionnaire" style="margin: 12px auto 6px auto; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; -x-system-font: none; display: block; text-decoration: underline;">Time Capsule Questionnaire</a><iframe class="scribd_iframe_embed" src="http://www.scribd.com/embeds/62949150/content?start_page=1&view_mode=list&access_key=key-2i0wkcpgof44s4a4ov17" data-auto-height="true" data-aspect-ratio="0.772727272727273" scrolling="no" id="doc_40853" width="100%" height="600" frameborder="0"></iframe><script type="text/javascript">(function() { var scribd = document.createElement("script"); scribd.type = "text/javascript"; scribd.async = true; scribd.src = "http://www.scribd.com/javascripts/embed_code/inject.js"; var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(scribd, s); })();</script><br />
<br />
And last, here are a few books I always read the first week. My favorite being, The First Day Jitters :) <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6gltbtpwp08/TlRHq9sWxhI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/QRwBI9ulA6g/s1600/IMG_1807.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="267" width="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6gltbtpwp08/TlRHq9sWxhI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/QRwBI9ulA6g/s400/IMG_1807.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
My first day back with the kids is Monday...Here's to a great, FRESH, creative school year!<br />

I ordered owl postcards to have on the kids' desks on the first day. I'm so happy with how cute they turned out...<br />
<br />
I also ordered magnets to give the parents on Back 2 School night...They were free (along with the 100 postcards) so I only paid for the shipping. How is that even possible?! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dKFLkYi-HCM/TkwWXb2dwTI/AAAAAAAAAIA/x1yP0yu8DJM/s1600/IMG_1997.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="288" width="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dKFLkYi-HCM/TkwWXb2dwTI/AAAAAAAAAIA/x1yP0yu8DJM/s400/IMG_1997.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a1IRoQVQMyo/TkwWlZgMiyI/AAAAAAAAAII/0mTt05aw1sE/s1600/IMG_1998.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="398" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a1IRoQVQMyo/TkwWlZgMiyI/AAAAAAAAAII/0mTt05aw1sE/s400/IMG_1998.JPG" /></a></div>The magnet idea came from another blog...not sure which one...so if it's yours, please take credit!!! <br />

I plan on having a daily language arts question on the board each day....<br />
<br />
Example : "Sea and See are Synonyms..." There will be a "yes" and "no" column that the kids will move their magnet to in order to answer the question. (If answered correctly they would move it to the "NO" column since they are homonyms...) <br />
<br />
Providing a safe and comfortable learning environment is crucial for these activities. Students need to feel that it's OK if their answer in a different column than others and that it's OK to make mistakes. I try to make it a point EVERY DAY to emphasize how important mistakes are because we can LEARN from them..<br />
<br />
All you need are glass gems, scrapbook paper, pen, magnets, hot glue gun and glass/bead glue! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OyY-9IYvNj0/Tki5F4CBs0I/AAAAAAAAAHo/gtkVRp7a8cg/s1600/IMG_1976.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="267" width="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OyY-9IYvNj0/Tki5F4CBs0I/AAAAAAAAAHo/gtkVRp7a8cg/s400/IMG_1976.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XT1CSi607BU/Tki6-TcdHmI/AAAAAAAAAH4/fj4LR-RmPq4/s1600/IMG_1972.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="267" width="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XT1CSi607BU/Tki6-TcdHmI/AAAAAAAAAH4/fj4LR-RmPq4/s400/IMG_1972.JPG" /></a></div>Other ideas for these could be:<br />
<br />
- <b>Daily 5</b> <br />
- Write a letter for each gem so students can build words<br />
<b>-Hanging Student Work</b><br />
- Utilize your whiteboard and hang projects with their name magnets<br />
- <b>Vowel Sound Sort</b><br />
- Write words with long and short vowel sounds for students to categorize<br />
<b>-Math</b><br />
- Write numbers...Students randomly grab...multiply, divide, add, subtract, etc!<br />
- <b>Gifts</b><br />
- Students can design their own for Mother's Day, Father's Day, Holiday gifts, etc! <br />

Maybe because I have been in my pajamas all day and have had endless refills of coffee. Thank goodness for my amazing fiance who has been cooking all the meals, so I can CREATE!!! <br />
<br />
I found a project on <a href="http://lessonplansos.blogspot.com">Lesson Plans SOS</a> that I just knew I had to make :) I give them all the credit for my creation and newfound love for MODGE PODGE!<br />
<br />
All you need is a bottle of Modge Podge Satin, brush, scrapbook paper, exacto knife and wooden letters!<br />

I love how they turned out! I plan to make the word WRITE as soon as I find some time... <br />

I went there with a friend this week and found inspiration for my new Back 2 School bulletin board. I saw these cute owls on a notebook and decided to make them with scrapbook paper for my board. I must say, they turned out pretty darn cute. Here is the notebook I saw...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OokV4ns300U/TkClp7T4tBI/AAAAAAAAAGg/aGS6-G-1qwU/s1600/owl%2Bnotebook.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OokV4ns300U/TkClp7T4tBI/AAAAAAAAAGg/aGS6-G-1qwU/s400/owl%2Bnotebook.jpeg" /></a></div>And here are my owls...can't wait to put em' up!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n-1ZVOo3qi0/TkCor4iYs0I/AAAAAAAAAGw/EctIwFmggDA/s1600/IMG_1906.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="336" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n-1ZVOo3qi0/TkCor4iYs0I/AAAAAAAAAGw/EctIwFmggDA/s400/IMG_1906.JPG" /></a></div><br />
I was thinking the title of the board would be, "Look Whoooo's Having a HOOT this year!" <br />
<br />
Here are a few other things I want to try...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aQ1zprBGuIQ/TkCt8az5EjI/AAAAAAAAAG4/YSeiZ3sQfkk/s1600/owlmissubars.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="175" width="287" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aQ1zprBGuIQ/TkCt8az5EjI/AAAAAAAAAG4/YSeiZ3sQfkk/s400/owlmissubars.jpg" /></a></div><br />

I think of the game on my own and put them together with cutouts (usually from the Dollar Store) and scrapbook paper. These are great for centers, early finisher tasks, partner work, and "smart choice" activities. Sometimes I let the kids check one out and take it home for extra reinforcement on concepts! <br />
<br />
First, here is the shower caddy turned file folder holder that I made! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FSFp46xGsu0/Tjzs87SS-HI/AAAAAAAAAFY/LFuLmNlEfGQ/s1600/IMG_1856.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="134" width="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FSFp46xGsu0/Tjzs87SS-HI/AAAAAAAAAFY/LFuLmNlEfGQ/s200/IMG_1856.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7nUY8wdGOe4/Tjzwr5p48wI/AAAAAAAAAGI/XuVtoTdKyJw/s1600/IMG_1900.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="267" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7nUY8wdGOe4/Tjzwr5p48wI/AAAAAAAAAGI/XuVtoTdKyJw/s400/IMG_1900.JPG" /></a></div><br />
I weaved ribbon in and out of the squares to give it a little spunk! <br />
<br />
I am posting pictures of some of the games I have created below! The first game is titled, <b>Don't monkey around! Learn your proper nouns!</b> Match the proper nouns on the circle cards to the basic nouns on the board (state/California, place/Disneyland)!<br />

<br />
1. <i>Palm Trees</i>- I am obsessed with them! I am so lucky to live in California so I can see their natural beauty every day! A palm tree wrapped with Christmas lights is just absolutely priceless.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oW1wIBrv_Wo/TjoJ_d-nZxI/AAAAAAAAAFI/4QMrc_wlOZs/s1600/palmtreelights.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="200" width="150" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oW1wIBrv_Wo/TjoJ_d-nZxI/AAAAAAAAAFI/4QMrc_wlOZs/s200/palmtreelights.jpg" /></a></div>2. <i>Mexican Food</i>...I could eat it for every meal and never tire of it. Chips and salsa, guacamole, enchiladas...So. dang. good.<br />
<br />
3. <i>Michaels</i> - I shop there WAY too much. But I love it. It makes my heart happy as soon as I walk through the door. It feeds my brain the creative food it craves. CONSTANTLY. <br />
<br />
4. <i>Golden Retrievers</i> - I want one. Like, ridiculously bad. I have a HUGE spot in my heart for animals. My fiance jokes, "If we get a dog, I will never get attention from you.." (haha, he's actually probably right ;) )<br />
<br />
5. <i>Working Out</i> - I will admit, I have to force myself, but when I get done, I feel like a million bucks. <br />
<br />
6. <i>Wife in Training</i> - I am truly blessed with a wonderful fiance who *adores* and *spoils* me. He is also a teacher...we met at the school where I teach....one of the best days of my teaching career was telling my students, "Guess what! Miss Adams is marrying Mr. Slayton!" (cheers, screams, tears, you name it, my students did it )<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MqAw5nieqbs/TjoKNtvx27I/AAAAAAAAAFQ/WC_xB24SHYk/s1600/DSCN6873.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="155" width="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MqAw5nieqbs/TjoKNtvx27I/AAAAAAAAAFQ/WC_xB24SHYk/s200/DSCN6873.JPG" /></a></div>7. <i>Enjoying the Simple Things</i> - It doesn't take much to make me happy. A hot cup of coffee. A good craft project. Sunshine. Bubble baths. A good book. Taking pictures. Two hour talks with my mom on Saturday mornings. Christmas lights. The list is never ending :) <br />
<br />
8. <i>October </i>- I absolutely love fall, Halloween, the pumpkin patch by the ocean, carving pumpkins, decorating (both classroom and home), apple cider, Halloween crafts, etc. There is an overall special "feeling" of fall that just warms my heart. Not to mention, I am also getting married on October 14th :) <br />
<br />
9. <i>Boots</i> - I could wear them every day and NEVER get tired of them. Boots with skirts, dresses, jeans, tights, leggings...I should have named by blog, "Teaching in boots.."<br />
<br />
10. <i>Flying</i> - I have a fear of flying. Growing up as a pilot's daughter, I used to LOVE to fly. After one fateful plane ride where the emergency masks dropped and we thought the plane was on fire, my love turned to hate. I am trying to overcome my fear, one plane ride at a time. <br />

I found a few goodies and gave them a *makeover*! I LOVE seeing an item, and thinking, "Hmmmm, what could I use THAT for?" Then the idea HITS and I run with it! I found a couple buckets and spiced them up a little! I also needed a home for my whiteboards and the perfect basket just appeared :) <br />
Here are the before and after pictures...<br />
